Valentine's Day is coming soon and kids may start thinking about cards they can give to their friends. Many grade school classes routinely have kids give everyone a card. Children who love crafts may want to make a tootsie pop valentine or a sock love bug to give to their friends.

Tootsie Pop Valentine

This fun craft is very simple to make and is fun to give. There are several ways to make it according to supplies available and the creativity of the maker.

Items Needed Tootsie pops Artificial flowers Green paper Scissors Pipe cleaners Single hole punch

1. The simplest way to make these valentines is to take apart artificial flowers. Pick a few petals and insert the stick end of the tootsie pop through the hole in the center of the petals. Hold in place against the body of the tootsie pop with your fingers.

2. Wrap one pipe cleaner tightly around the stick directly beneath the flower petals. This will hold the petals in place.

3. If you want to, write a message on a small leaf shaped piece of paper and punch a hole in the 'stem' side. Thread a second pipe cleaner through the hole on the card and secure in place by bending the pipecleaner.

4. Wrap the other end of the pipe cleaner around the stick to secure the message to the tootsie roll. This simple craft can be a lot of fun and is so easy to make kids can make one for each person in their class if they want to.

Sock Love Bug

This craft will require a bit more time and effort to create. These cute little animals are fun to create, but finding valentine themed socks is a bit seasonal. Check local dollar stores for cheap ones.

Items Needed

Valentine anklet sock

Cotton balls

Colored embroidery thread

Cloth colored pens

Pipe cleaner

Heart stickers

1. Fill the sock almost full with cotton balls. The sock should be squeezable, but not overfilled.

2. Tie the end of the sock closed with a length of embroidery thread. This should make a small oblong shaped body for the bug. The most effective way to do this is to tie a large knot at the end of the thread and use a needle to sew around the edge of the sock mouth. Pull the thread tight and tie off the ends to keep it closed.

3. Pick one side to be the face of the bug and draw on eyes, nose and mouth.

4. Create the antennae for the bug by wrapping a pipe cleaner around the 'neck' of the bug and leaving the ends pointing up above the head.

5. Add the heart shaped stickers to the ends of the antenna for additional decoration if desired.

Additional details can be added as desired. Hearts can be drawn with the cloth markers, lace can be added around the neck and pom-poms can be added for legs. Sew or draw items directly onto the sock whenever possible to ensure they will remain on the love bug for years to come.

These are just two easy ideas for fun valentine crafts for kids of all ages to enjoy.
