Driving and carpooling is the transportation form of choice for over a hundred million Americans per day, according to the numbers.

This simply means that you would most likely be dealing with a lot of cars and people on the road, increasing the need for you to keep safe. Here are five tips you should always follow on the road.

Keep your vehicle properly maintained. Have your vehicle serviced periodically as stated on its manual, and keep a close eye on your oil filters, air filters, spark plugs and the oil and gas itself. Also, be sure tires are properly inflated and gas levels are sufficient.

Carry an emergency kit. In addition to standards such as a first aid kit and battery jumper cables, consider adding the Autolite TriGlo safety light to your vehicle emergency kit. This is such a nifty addition because it would serve the purposes of both a flashlight and a flare. Triangular in shape, the TriGlo light can be used as a bright spotlight or as a blinking safety triangle to warn oncoming traffic of a motorist's presence.

Buckle up. Seatbelts, may they be lap or shoulder, are essential in avoiding all sorts of injuries to front seat passengers, so be sure to buckle up - one simple action could save your life and others'.

Know your route. You will always need some time to map out your route before traveling. Motor clubs such as AAA provide auto travelers with maps and detailed directions to their destinations. Be aware of traffic, construction and weather advisories along your route so you can make alternate plans should these conditions affect your drive.

Don't allow yourself to get distracted. Heavy traffic, obnoxious drivers and construction can play a part here, but you can't avoid these things for the most part. You may need to take a look inside your vehicle and see if there's anything that may be causing distractions.

One good way to do this would be through the Autolite SpotGlo (tm) seatbelt light source, which eliminates the glare caused by overhead lights. It's very easy to install, as you can simply slide it onto the seatbelt strap to your liking - it's battery operated and bantam in size, making it quite convenient. The SpotGlo (tm) eliminates driver distraction by casting an LED light source just where the passenger needs it to be.
