Survival food storage or emergency food storage gets a bad wrap for nutritional content. Especially, the knock is it's high content of sodium. Part of the reason for higher sodium is to preserve the food. Freeze dried food caries an extremely long shelf with some products lasting 25 years or more.

However, when you start to look at products that we eat on a daily basis, you'll notice the sodium isn't unusually high. McDonald's menu has a number of items on their menu that are 1000 mg or higher. A serving from a freeze dried meal is generally less than 1000mg. One in particular meal at McDonalds, the Angus Bacon and Cheese is 2070 milligrams of sodium. More than 2 times the amount that's in most freeze dried food product meals.

Hamburger Helper Stroganoff has 750mg of sodium per serving compared to the general freeze dried stroganoff that has 700-900mg. When I was younger, we consumed that sodium on a daily or weekly basis.

The fat content of the freeze dried food meals are generally less than 10% of daily allowance. These meals are packed with good protein, vitamins and minerals. Low in cholesterol. Because of this good nutritional value of the product, the ease of preparation, freeze dried food that was once traditionally only thought of as emergency food storage is being prepared as more of a daily or weekly menu option.

Food that prepared for long term food storage, is initially prepared as good tasting, well balanced ready to eat meals that are then freeze dried. During that freeze dry process, almost all of the water is removed but the food stays exactly the same. The freeze drying helps prepare the food to be portable, easy to store and gives is an extended shelf life.

In summary, freeze dried food does contain a higher sodium content than some foods but as much or less than a lot of the popular food we eat today that is not freeze dried.
