Plan Your Budget- Before doing anything, make a detailed budget so it's ready when you're pricing everything you need for your move. Having it written out makes it easier to keep tabs and cut costs if possible. You'll never know when an unexpected cost comes up and it's nice to have some wiggle room.

Do It Yourself Move- Moving yourself may seem like a cost effective option at first glance, especially if you're moving a short distance. You'll have to really budget your costs if you're moving a longer distance away. These are all the things you should consider when deciding if your should do it yourself or hire a professional moving company.

1. Taking time off work

Filling up on gas

Renting hotel rooms

4. Renting hand trucks and dollies

Buying packing blankets

Renting hand trucks and dollies

Getting additional insurance coverage

Providing food and beverages for your helpers

Hire a Professional- Picking out a professional moving company may be the hardest item to take care of. Do your due diligence when researching, just don't take someone's word it about a moving company. You also can check with the BBB for complaints against the company. Be sure to read, 20 Questions to Ask Your Moving Company to help you with your search.

Packing Essentials- Many people just think of the major expenses involved with moving like renting a truck but don't forget about the packing supplies such as tape, boxes, bubble wrap, furniture padding, wrapping paper etc.... as they can really add up and you might not have the money budgeted for it.

Consider Timing- Another item most people overlook is the time of the move. Peak periods mean higher rates from professional movers and if possible, postponing a move could save you thousands. Thinking about your children's school schedule is another consideration to make. Can they handle a move during a school year? And if needed, will a baby sitter be available when you move?

Safe storage- If need temporary storage during a move or if you're just out of space, consider renting a self service storage unit. You'll usually find one close by and they all offer safe, convenient storage so you really can go with the cheapest self storage company you can find. Many of them offer specials on certain sizes if they have a high inventory so be sure to ask.
