I purchased two of these hand-held fans for a trip that my wife and I took to St Lucia. First of all, while yes they do blow a nice current of air it isn't super-cool air as they advertise, no matter how cold the water you put in the sponge is. When it's melted we just drink it and replace it with a new frozen one from the ice cooler. This set up worked really great for out two week trip in Disney World and South Florida.
I wish I could have given it zero stars, but the review system would not let you. As a beauty therapist, I know how important it is to look after your skin and how much damage a fan or an a/c can do. The controls are straight-forward. I'd recommend this for anyone who wants to cool themselves; it's not built to cool a group of people or room. The wind power isn't very powerful but you do feel a breeze of cool air blowing out of it. I was worried that this would be too heavy but I realized that the product itself is very light, just the batteries that take of most of its weight. Then I opened the box and found that my handy cooler that I spent around $60 for was full of dings and scratches! It had OBVIOUSLY been a previously used unit. It's no new technology. It's just evaporative cooling technology that's been out for decades.
I like the analog speed control so you can adjust the level cooling you want. It works on batteries but I've only tried it once and it works just the same. The filter dries out in 1-2 hours depending on the conditions you use it in. I bought 4 rechargeable batteries for this device and it has worked well for me.
I bought this at the beginning of the summer and have been using it since. Works like a breeze and no problems yet. It's just taking swamp coolers and putting it into a little hand held plastic blower. I still like it, but since it stores a limited amount of water every time it can be bothering to rewet the filter that is inside the unit. It would be perfect if the handy cooler had some sort of constant rotational device that could make the cool air circulate more, but all in all, for what it's worth I couldn't be happier! The handy cooler does everything that it claims to do.
Save you money and buy a floor fan. At least that will circulate air. To put it in simple words, this is a machine where you pay a steep premium for the cool air. If you have health issues or can't take the heat, this is a must-have.
When purchasing, I thought this was a hand held device with batteries. I received the shipping and discovered that although it fits well in the hand, it is even better if I use it on my desk.
